OLIVE OIL PARK
Architectural and urban proposal
Typology: Urban intervention
Client: Imagine the city
Location: Rethymno, Greece
Status: Exhibited, 2012
The work was exhibited and published in ‘Imagine the city’ publication for the participation in the architecture exhibition for architectural and urban proposals for the city. The project attempted to bring back the cultural and social vibe of the area. It proposed an olive oil park. It is a meeting point of entertainment and learning.
The design idea emerged from two different parameters. First, the urban infrastructure and the site characteristics; The site is on the waterfront, surrounding with commercial and residential buildings. Thus, a walking platform has been proposed along the seafront. Then the design concept derived from our research into the olive oil process.
The walking platform leads to an olive oil workstation, in an old oil factory. It attempts to bring back to life the event of producing olive oil and at the same time create an experience to the public. The public can see and join in the process of producing alive oil which is one of the oldest and most popular process in the island of Crete.
Leaving the workstation and continuing the journey through the platform, the user steps into an outdoor market place. The marketplace is constructed by a three dimensional metal grid. The scaffolding structure exposed and partially closed creates solids and voids that are used for the needs of the market. Its incomplete but at the same time rigid form is referencing to the controlled environment of the olive oil process till it reaches the end point of consumption.
