Typology: Independent art-house cinema

Client: Cinecentre Ltd

Location: London, UK

Status: Completed, 2020

The garden cinema is a new privately owned art-house cinema in Covent Garden. The project consists the conversion of an office space into a cinema and the interior design of the space.

The concept refers back to the original design of the 1940's cinema. The space accommodates varied activities such as a bar, a cafe and spaces for events, meetings, performances and film seminars.

The cinema has two screens: one with 76 seats, the other with 40. A third screen with 60 seats will be added in the future. The choice of material and furniture echoes the iconic art deco style.  The team collaborated with other independent designers and consultants of the Cinecentre to conceive and complete the project.

The space features exclusive materials and craftsmanship. The furniture and fittings were built manually and designed specifically for this space.

A palette of beige, red and green creates an art deco aesthetic, reminiscent of the retro 1940's cinema. The amphitheatre together with the banquettes is upholstered in rich red velvet. The bar area is using LED lights, midnight blue hued wallpaper and red velvet furniture to give it the feel of a classic night venue.
