CHANIA PORT
Façades renovation | New shelters proposal
Typology: Urban intervention
Client: Chania council
Location: Chania, Greece
Status: Competition entry, 2013
Participation in the architecture competition for the renovation of Chania’s old port. The project proposed a series of Corten frame- shelters. The shelters can be customised according to the needs of each restaurant and bar maintaining the authenticity and uniqueness of the place.
Two circulation routes have been proposed; The wider one runs along the seashore. The secondary one is used as the serving route. The shelters create an "in between" linear route between the sea and the shops which becomes a socialising and meeting point.
The colour of the Corten integrates with the Venetian architecture of the port. The user can modify the frames creating different physical spaces that accommodate a variety of events, i.e. The frame can be extended and transformed into a sitting area.
The frames are also used as the structural support system for the panels, the equipment and the lighting fittings of the restaurants.
Some lighter frame structures have been proposed on the port decks that create an urban installation and a meeting point for the public. White fabric is suspending from the frames for shading and referencing back to the Greek myth of Aegeus.
